Wayfair Furniture Review: How to Buy Well From a Marketplace

By Emilia Nov 3, 2026 6 min read
Wayfair Furniture Review

Wayfair does not make furniture. That single fact explains most of what people get wrong about it.

Wayfair is a marketplace. Thousands of separate suppliers list on it, and the quality of what arrives depends entirely on which supplier made the item you clicked. A sofa from one listing and a sofa from the next listing can come from different factories on different continents with nothing in common except the website they were sold on. Reviewing Wayfair as a furniture brand is a category error.

What can be reviewed is the buying experience, the policies, and the method for separating the good listings from the bad ones.

What the Review Scores Say, and What They Leave Out

  1. Trustpilot: 1.3 out of 5 from 6,108 reviews. 83% one star, 8% five star
  2. Wayfair replies to 96% of negative reviews, usually within 24 hours

Read that with context. Wayfair ships tens of millions of orders a year. Six thousand reviews is a rounding error against that volume, and the people who go out of their way to write one are overwhelmingly the people whose order went wrong. The score tells you what failure looks like at Wayfair. It does not tell you how often failure happens.

What is useful is the pattern inside the complaints, because that is consistent.

The Four Recurring Problems

Wayfair Furniture

Shop Now

1. Delivery

Delays, missing packages, split shipments where half the order arrives and the rest does not. Large items go by freight carriers that Wayfair does not control, and tracking information often stops updating mid route.

2. Condition on arrival

Damaged, scratched, dented or stained items. Flat packed furniture travelling through a freight network takes a beating, and some suppliers package better than others.

3. Listings that do not match

Colour different from the photograph, dimensions that read smaller in the room than on the page, materials that turn out to be veneer rather than solid. Marketplace listings are written by the supplier, not by Wayfair.

4. Support and fees

Inconsistent answers between agents, no price adjustment when an item drops in price after purchase, and return shipping deducted from refunds.

The Wayfair Family of Sites

Wayfair runs several storefronts at different price points. Same company, same logistics, different curation:

  1. Wayfair: everything, widest price range, most variable quality
  2. AllModern: mid century and contemporary, tighter selection
  3. Birch Lane: classic and farmhouse styles
  4. Joss & Main: trend driven, heavy discounting
  5. Perigold: luxury and designer brands, much higher prices

Perigold is the one worth noting. It carries actual furniture brands rather than anonymous suppliers, which changes the quality question entirely.

How to Order From Wayfair Without Getting Burned

  1. Read reviews on the specific listing, not the brand. Ignore the star average and read the three star reviews, which is where the honest detail sits
  2. Look for customer photos. A listing with dozens of real photos is a listing that has shipped a lot and survived
  3. Check the dimensions against a tape measure on your floor. Furniture photographed in a large room looks different in a small one
  4. Read the materials line carefully. Manufactured wood, engineered wood and MDF are the same thing
  5. Be present for the delivery and open the box before the driver leaves if the carrier allows it
  6. Report damage within 48 hours for appliances and within 30 days for everything else
  7. Avoid Open Box and clearance if you might want to return it, because both are final sale

Shipping and Returns

Returns

  1. 30 days from delivery on most items
  2. Items must be in original, undamaged condition
  3. Return shipping is normally deducted from the refund
  4. Small parcel returns run roughly $4.99 to $19.99
  5. Large furniture collected by freight runs roughly $20 to $50 or more
  6. Return shipping is generally covered for damaged, defective or incorrect items reported in time
  7. Choosing store credit instead of a refund sometimes waives the shipping fee, though this is not guaranteed

Not returnable

  1. Open Box items
  2. Clearance and final sale
  3. Made to order and personalised products
  4. Gift cards, live plants and fabric swatches
  5. Hazardous materials
  6. Promotional bundles returned only in part
  7. Anything marked Non-Returnable
  8. Installed major appliances

Large items and appliances

  1. Major appliances must usually be reported within 48 hours, left uninstalled and kept in the original packaging
  2. Oversized returns are collected by scheduled pickup, so someone has to be home
  3. Self assembled furniture usually has to be disassembled before return

Damaged on arrival

  1. Report through My Orders, choose Problem with this Order, and upload photographs
  2. Outcomes include replacement parts, a partial refund, or a full refund with free return shipping
  3. For items that are difficult to ship back, support sometimes refunds without requiring a return

FAQs

Is Wayfair furniture good quality?

Some of it is and some of it is not, because Wayfair is a marketplace rather than a manufacturer. Quality is a property of the listing, not of the website. The same budget on Wayfair buys something excellent or something disposable depending on which supplier you pick.

Is Wayfair legit?

Yes. It is a publicly traded company headquartered in Boston. Orders arrive and refunds are paid. The complaints are about condition, accuracy and fees, not about fraud.

Does Wayfair have free returns?

Not as standard. Return shipping is usually deducted from your refund. It is free when the item arrived damaged, defective or incorrect and you report it in time.

Why is Wayfair rated so low on Trustpilot?

Because Wayfair does not solicit reviews, so the page fills up with people who had a problem. The score reflects the complaint population rather than the customer population. Use it to learn what goes wrong, not how often.

Is Perigold the same as Wayfair?

Same parent company, different catalogue. Perigold sells named designer and luxury brands at much higher prices, which removes most of the anonymous supplier problem.

Final Verdict

Wayfair is a tool, and it rewards people who use it carefully.

The selection is enormous, the prices are often the lowest available, and the 30 day window gives you real protection if something arrives wrong. Against that, returns cost money, listings are written by suppliers rather than checked by Wayfair, and freight delivery on large items is the weakest part of the whole operation.

Treat every listing as a separate purchase from a separate company, because that is what it is. Read the reviews on the item, check the materials line, measure the space, and keep the packaging until you are sure. Done that way, Wayfair is good value. Done on trust, it is a lottery.
